Remnant (connect and interrelate) • • • SOLD

8X6 oil on canvas pane I found this deteriorating remnant of a conch shell in the garden of the place we recently stayed in Port Aransas. It was sun-bleached cream color, and made an excellent subject for a value study in warm and cool. My objective was to connect and interrelate the values and colors of the object with the background and foreground.

I’ve read in a number of places, that if we get the values right, any colors will work. I agree with that to a degree, but I think it’s mainly said to stress the foundational importance of value. However, the hue and chroma (intensity/saturation) variations assigned to the values play a major role in the effect of the picture. In this study I try to repeat warm light and cool shadow relationships while varying the chroma. The colors found in any area of the painting are formed from the same two basic hues (orange and blue-violet) with white and black. The values of the shell are joined to the background and foreground to connect and interrelate the design.
