Good Company (scraping off & trying again)

8×6 oil on canvas panel I’m in a foul mood as I’m making stupid mistakes… This morning I lost beyond repair a painting with which I had been happy, having done about twenty sessions on it; it had to be thoroughly scraped away… what a rage I was in! (Claude Monet)Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. (Albert Einstein)

Sometimes part of meeting my commitment to complete a painting each weekday means doing what I can in the time available. The positive side to this circumstance is that I consider it good exercise to be forced to work more quickly now and then. The change of pace keeps me in shape for painting out of doors, where the light is changing as you work. The idea is to make your decisions count, put ‘em down and push on. There just isn’t the time to be overly fussy. It also keeps me from getting too caught up with any single effort. One of the reasons I find daily painting so helpful is that I’m not in the mind set of painting for the gallery. I’m working on one more in an ongoing series of studies. While it’s always nice to get a “winner”, that’s not my focus, and so I’m free to experiment, make mistakes, scrape it off and try it again. Tomorrow’s another day, – and another painting!
