Bananapple (motivation and inspiration)

10_11_07.jpg

$89 unframed
8×6 oil on canvas panel I wanted to use the plate I found at the Goodwill store. How’s that for a deeply moving motive to paint? One of the things I like about daily painting is the “keep on truckin’” nature of the approach. You can’t wait until you’re “moved” to paint, or you don’t move. I try to get focused on something (anything) that attracts my interest for whatever reason, and then try to make the most of it. Sometimes it’s the object, sometimes it’s a particular skill I’m working on, and sometimes I’m just doing the next painting. In the doing we discover what we never would have found if we waited for inspiration.

People who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity, no matter how impressive their other talents. (Andrew Carnegie)Amateurs look for inspiration; the rest of us just get up and go to work. (Chuck Close)

Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while one is working. (Henri Matisse)
