"The Silver Tray" (A shining example)

09_07_07.jpg

$89 unframed

8×6 oil on canvas panel For me, part of the value of doing daily paintings is being able to carefully select what I’m going to work on. I guess some of the really good painters whose blogs I visit must be able to select whatever they want, and out comes another dazzler. I have to think about not only doing something I’m interested in painting, but trying to keep it within my reach. That means not giving myself something beyond my ability (too many items, or an overly complex visual effect) , but keeping it challenging enough that I will continue to learn and grow.

In this one I chose a favorite little silver tray that came to us by my wife’s grandmother. It was plenty challenging for me to try to catch the various nuances of values, shine and reflection in this. All in all I’m fairly happy with it. The apple seems kind of lonely though. Am I backed out to far? What would you do?
