6×8 oil on canvas panel Here’s one that I almost tossed. You ever feel like, “Why on earth do I think I can make paintings?”? When I set this up, I enjoyed the simple way the big shadow shape envelopes the vase and interacts with the light area. There’s light falling on and through the vase, but because of its deep blue color and transparency it tends to join the shadow shape. The transparent and reflective qualities of the vase were beguiling, but the shadow area seemed dead and opaque by contrast. It was the right value, but the painting as a whole was dull. So, standing at the trashcan, feeling defeated, I decided, “Why not try to do something to liven up the shadow? I have nothing to lose.” I just love that about daily painting. As I began to experiment, I found a way to make it more appealing and dimensional. I like this little painting now, and I learned that I don’t have to be dictated to only by what I see. I like painting, again!
