8×6 oil on canvas panel Painting a glass of water can turn out to be quite challenging! I started this late in the afternoon, thinking I’d just knock-out my painting for the day. Dazzled by what I saw in the reflections, sparkle and distortions, I was drawn into a maze of painting problems. Good to be overwhelmed sometimes, but I was tempted to bail-out on this one. Facing the fact that I didn’t have time to finish the painting, I cleaned up and went to dinner. When I came back in the morning and clicked on my spotlight, the slice had sunken to the bottom of the glass, the water was cloudy and the halves were shriveled. It was an interesting lesson to finish this one based upon my stored recollection of the subject from the intense scrutiny of the day before. I was freed from the tyranny of the object, and had to make peace with what I could synthesize from my mental impression. I was reminded that at some point the painting needs to take on a life and demands of its own. I want to learn to paint better, not just transcribe labored detail.
