"Pear" (Painting or Picture) N/A

6×8 oil on canvas panel Doing one simple subject offers the opportunity to think clearly about trying to build in everything I can to make it worthy of a painting, as opposed to simply being a record of an object. I’m talking about the crucial relationships of value, color, shape, dominance, contrast, repetition, gradation,…. Working representationally requires balancing the see-saw between objective fact and abstract design concerns. Either extreme is uninteresting, to me, as far as making a painting. When I get a good result, the painting is somehow exhilarating to look at, even when its just a pear. You could say, I want it to appear as more than a pear ;). The fun is to turn it into a PEAR!
