"Cantelope Color" (Where is that tube?) N/A

Not Available

8×6 oil on canvas panel My challenge here was to get the various colorations of the cantelope slices as their planes turned in different aspects to the light and shade. I’m always interested in the various pigments needed in the pursuit of the desired color. After deciding on what will be the basic “cantelope color”, it’s necessary to make decisions about where it’s warmer or cooler. Simply lightening and darkening the basic color will only yield a dead, unappealing value rendering of the subject. For me the beauty of color results from not only accurate value relationships, but temperature as well. To get the temperature changes, we have to experiment with what at first may seem to be the most unlikely additions of pigments. When it’s right, all the colors appear to be of the same basic color. In this case “cantelope color”.
